Associate Professor, Dept. of English, University of Toronto

Special Book: Mimesis: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature, Erich Auerbach
When did you first read this book:
The summer of 1993, just before my first year at UVic.
Describe why this book has special significance for you?
I’ve no idea how, but Mimesis was the first book I bought from the UVIc bookstore, before I even bought any textbooks, and the first work of literary criticism I ever read. Sadly it’s been mostly downhill ever since then.
